THIS SATURDAY I'M GRATEFUL...

- Dappled sunlight and home made healthy icypoles. Put in any combination of pureed fruit or yoghurt and you can give them to your children any time of day and give them seconds and even thirds with no guilt at all.*

- The sweet and strong waft of mint as I brush past the overgrown & ever expanding plants on the way to the clothesline every day. Every....single....day...multiple...times do I tread that well worn path to the clothesline.

- Mr FBG being home for two whole actual weekends in a row and today makes the third ..... heaven.... and something we haven't had for longer than I can remember. Not sure if he feels quite the same, as he spent the whole day last Saturday pruning the trees around our yard that were suffering from years of neglect ... I'm grateful that things are finally starting to get 'done' around here!

What are you grateful for?

* a few people have asked me about these recently - you just buy the moulds at your local supermarket. You can get fancy and do rainbow stripes with multiple fruits or lazy and pour in ready made fruit juice. The BEST is pureed mango..mmmmm.

MY CREATIVE SPACE...when a party lives on...

Long after a party is over at our house, the theme seems to live on for quite some time. It's the same with every party. I could never justify the expense or effort on things that would never be used again, so maybe that's the reason that the Japanese influence is still strong at FGB headquarters.

We repeated the blossom tree craft last week at playgroup and each and every birthday card leaving our house in the last month has looked very much like this one....

A 'how to make a paper crane' tutorial was the Show & Tell last week along with a paper crane for each child in the class - I did mention she was obsessed didn't I?! We now have them hanging along the kitchen window also and some gorgeous little origami hearts were made for each of us on Valentine's Day.

Last week, just to use our asian soup spoons we had Chicken & Sweet Corn soup for dinner and on the
menu almost every day for lunch at the moment...

Cherry blossom sandwiches anyone?*

And I can't forget Japanese Poker. Of course, as mentioned previously, all party decos stay up in the shed until the next party and once a month Mr FGB has a poker night in the shed. So this month the boys enjoyed Japanese rice snacks, Japanese lollies along with some Japanese beer and according to their fortune cookies, not all of them were going home rich men.

Do you find this happens at your house after a party....or is it just me? Maybe after all of the effort it takes, I just can't let go?

How do you let your creative juices flow? Head over here to see some others.

* We did this another day with beetroot dip and open sandwiches - pink blossoms! A bit of creative fun never goes astray - we must amuse ourselves whenever we can and right now - I really only have room to move in the small things :)

DIY DUCK PARTY INSPIRATION

A friend of mine recently asked me for ideas for a duck themed birthday party for her two year old. I thought it the perfect excuse to do another inspiration board and to do one of my favorite things - search the web for kids party ideas! Obviously if you used all of these ideas it would be far too OTT and ridiculously expensive, but there might be one or two things to spark your imagination.

An absolutely gorgeous "Quacky 2nd Birthday". More gorgeous ideas and tutorials here.

FEELING STRESSED ?!

This little activity was something that the kids did at the end of last year when some friends came over after school one day. It became the favorite activity for quite some time every time we had a friend over! After the first time, it was relegated as an outside activity...

HOW TO MAKE STRESS BALLS

1. Blow a balloon up to stretch it out a bit.
2. Insert a funnel into the opening of the balloon. (We just used fingers - took longer, but kids enjoyed more)
3. Fill the balloon with rice.
4. Tie the end of the balloon into a tight knot. Snip off the excess balloon close to the knot.
5. Take another balloon in a contrasting color. Cut off the neck of the balloon, and cut a few small holes in the balloon.
6. Pull the balloon over the rice-filled balloon, covering the knot. Repeat Step 5 to add another layer of colors to your stress ball.
7. Start squeezing those stresses away!

We used rice because we had a whole lot spare from doing Lou's colored rice activity (really fun and worth a try, BTW!) But, I think it would possibly work even better with flour instead of rice. Flour would certainly go through the funnel much more easily.

THIS SATURDAY I'M GRATEFUL...

* for teamwork - now that Mr FGB is around a lot more, I'm really appreciating the value of being a team in this parenting gig. You can do so much more when you are not spread quite so thinly.

* for breathing - I feel like I can breathe slowly again. Exhale. Not feeling quite so restricted. I'm still living a very busy life, but it feels like a rather dreamy, surreal & blissful existence at the moment - I'm waiting for the bubble to burst - is that sad?

* for hindsight - though it's never fun while you're in the thick of it, when looking back over tough times you can see how they have moulded and shaped you into who you have become and help you to appreciate the good times all the more!

* for the gorgeous handmade heartshaped crocheted garland giveaway that I won from the talented Lioness Lady - I'm loving the splash of color it brings - thanks so much!

What are you grateful for this Saturday?

VEGIE GARDEN UPDATE

One good thing about all this rain we've been having is that the vegie garden has not required too much attention this summer. I was planning on letting it go dormant this summer and let the nastursiums run rampant, as last summer it just seemed too much effort to water it regularly to keep it alive. But the rain has meant I could still give it a go with minimal effort.

I planted my baby tomatoes...(well, actually my Mum did as they'd been sitting in their punnets in the laundry for weeks & I was never going to get around to it!)....back in November
- I remember hearing once not to plant your tomatoes until after Melbourne Cup Day.
With all of the rain, the plants themselves have thrived, even if the fruit was a little slow. Possibly the last tomatoes to ripen in the whole of Melbourne, we have finally had our first ripe baby tomatoes! A few weeks ago, I added some basil, parsley and marigolds alongside the tomatoes. A few lettuces and a pumpkin had self- seeded, along with some additional tomato plants. The self-seeding tomatoes have so far produced the most fruit...interesting...

However, pride of place in our vegie garden at the moment goes to a tall and luscious silverbeet plant that you no doubt don't remember me mentioning that Goose planted as a seed at the school gardening club last year. She had thought it was a beetroot....close enough ;) She's still proud.

This cheeky little Frog doesn't even like eating tomatoes, but came over from the sandpit (note the state of the hands) to see what I was doing and to pose for a photo.

Her big sister Goose, does however quite enjoy the little tomatoes. So much so that when I sent her outside to collect some last night, I glanced out the window to see her eating the lot! "Oh, I didn't know you meant you wanted me to collect them for the dinner.....!" she said.

Do you have a vegie patch this summer? How is it going?

LAST MINUTE VALENTINE'S PRINTABLES...

Although I'm not necessarily into the whole Valentine's Day hype - sometimes we celebrate it & sometimes we don't - I do like the little reminder it gives to tell someone you care.

I couldn't let this occasion slip by without passing on some cute and FREE printables that I found in blogland to add a little extra something to Valentine's Day.... or any other day of the year that you feel like being a little corny... but corny with style ;)

Just click on the words below the images to find out more and to download. Both of the sites have other gorgeous free printables along the theme of 'love'. Go searching here, here and here for a start. They are seriously stylish!

Alternatively this could be to your vintage taste...or maybe the fun e-card...or the funky fox & panda or this adorable little hearty collection.

SWEET SWEET FRIDAY

I've been making these deliciously simple truffles* since my childhood. They are probably the easiest recipe that I have ever put on this blog. They don't need any baking and it's fun for the kids to help out with. Careful though as they're very morish...

EASY TRUFFLES

1 pkt marie biscuits, crushed
1 tin condensed milk
1 cup coconut
2 tbspns cocoa
(1/2 cup coconut extra)

Mix dry ingredients, add condensed milk and mix well. Roll into balls and roll in extra coconut.

I was going to link up this post with the lovely Lucy, The Kitchen Maid. Sadly, no more linky :( but I'd highly recommend that you do go and look at her blog... She has such a way with words and some truly great recipes. I have bookmarked too many to count!

* or rumballs as we used to call them. They don't have any rum....but you could always add some!

MY CREATIVE SPACE...

To continue with my little obsession with origami paper, we used the scraps from Goose's party to make some fun little peg magnets to stick on the fridge. They were super easy thanks to Aimee's great tutorial and Goose and I loved making them! We even skipped the last half of the tutorial and made them without the modpodge as I liked the matte look better. There are now far too many on our fridge holding various artworks, lists and photos.

This year, just because I didn't have enough to do (ha!) I am co-ordinating the "craft" activities at my MOPS* group. This morning we all made peg magnets and then attached them to some of my favorite printable lists**. I am a huge fan of making lists - couldn't survive without them - and if I am going to be surrounded by them, I might as well make them pleasing to the eye, I say!

If you have any ideas for quick and easy craft ideas, please pass them this way.
If you'd like to see how others are being creative head over to Kootoyoo.

*MOPS - Mothers Of Pre Schoolers - a lovely nurturing group who meet once a fortnight at our church giving time out and bit of rejuvenation to worn out Mums like me!

** The printable notepaper pictured was purchased here. There are cute free ones here. Others we had at MOPS were this and this. I'm a little addicted to printable notepaper...

GENTLEMAN'S RELISH

A while ago I purchased a tiny jar of homemade 'Gentleman's Relish' for Mr FGB at my friend's regular little backyard market made by my sister's friend Kat. The ingredients of butter, nutmeg, cayenne pepper and anchovies had me intrigued and I knew it was the perfect gift for a man who fancy's himself as a bit of a gentleman.*

It is a form of anchovy paste which is eaten on nice warm toast.

After polishing the whole jar off in about 5 minutes flat, he was practically licking the inside of the small jar when he said "WHAT was THAT...and where can I get some in larger quantities!?!"

As we happened to have a jar of anchovies in the cupboard (doesn't everyone?!), he set about experimenting and making up some of his own. We discovered later that this is the recipe that she used.**

GENTLEMAN'S RELISH

  • 150 g butter
  • a few pinches cayenne pepper
  • a few pinches freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1 tin/jar anchovy fillets, drained and mashed roughly

1. Put the butter, cayenne pepper and a little grated nutmeg into a medium-sized pan and melt over a gentle heat.

2. Add the anchovies and stir for a couple of minutes until they have melted, but don't let the mixture boil.

3. Pour the relish into a ramekin. Put in the fridge to set.

4. Serve spread thinly on nice warm toast.

Have you heard of something like this before? Could it be the perfect, quick and easy handmade pressie for the gentleman in your life this Valentine's Day? ...... although on second thoughts maybe fish breath is not quite what you'd be after..... it is apparently quite delicious though!

* And rightly so!
** Mr FGB just blended the ingredients together with electric beaters to get the look you see in the photo instead of melting the butter. We'll melt the butter next time.

CHEERS GRANDPA

I can't believe that it's been 2 years...

With Mr FGB's brothers both overseas we'll be having my mother--in-law over for dinner tonight and having a glass of ginger beer and a chinotto or two (vile stuff that it is) to remember 'Grandpa'. We had a tradition for a while making my father-in-law homemade ginger beer every year for his birthday. This picture was taken in his holiday home in Marysville a few years ago drinking our homemade brew. I like to still picture him sitting right there.

I WANT WHAT SHE IS WEARING

As I sit here today in the most comfortable piece of clothing I own... no, not tracksuit pants or pyjamas.... but an item that whenever I wear it I get asked - "Where did you get that?" - I am reminded that I have been meaning to blog about it for quite some time!

It happens to be a comfy, yet stylish, soft cotton top that covers all those new lumps and bumps that I've been blessed with since that adorable third child!

I purchased it at the launch of a new little online business that some lovely friends of mine started at the end of last year.

Aptly named 'I Want What She is Wearing'.
Seriously, go and check it out
- here-
you'll not be sorry!
